Mazda to adopt four-year product cycle
The next generation of the Mazda2 will allegedly ride on a shortened platform of the CX-5, according to a spokesperson of a UK importer.
Taking into account the Mazda2 is considerably smaller than the CX-5, the Japanese engineers will have to do some serious chopping to make this happen. The CX-5 platform has already been used for the stylish Mazda6 and will also be implemented in the new Mazda3 (hatchback and sedan) due before the end of the year. The Skyactiv platform will eventually underpin all FWD models, including a CX-9 successor.
The same source indicates Mazda will make the switch to a four-year cycle which means the current Mazda6 will be replaced in 2016, following a 2014 update. It's not known whether models using platforms from other automakers will be a part of this scheme.
We assume the next-gen Mazda2 will be out sometime next year.
